Our Janome Hello Kitty 15312 Review
The first thing you’ll notice about the Hello Kitty 15312 is its design. The machine is periwinkle blue in color with gold, white and red stars strewn across the top of the machine. Hello Kitty herself sits in the corner. While cute, the design is still “grown-up” enough for adults to use it.
Set-up is easy. There’s no automatic threader, but the instruction manual and diagram make it relatively easy to tackle this task. The manual will help you through the set-up process quickly, but you can also find other helpful videos on YouTube.
Like other Janome machines, this model has a heavy-duty metal frame. With a metal frame, you never really worry about skipped stitches or the machine rocking back and forth too much. It adds some weight, but ensures that the machine will last a long time.
Janome includes 12 built-in stitches that will work with just about every project. There’s also a four-step buttonhole, so you can easily add buttons to your projects.
There are two dials on the front of the machine that allow you to adjust the length of the stitch and the zigzag width. The stitch selection dial is on the side of the machine for easy access and use.
The front of the machine also has a diagram that lists all of the stitches, so you can find the right one for your project. We like that there are only 15 stitches to choose from because having an overabundance of stitches can be overwhelming. Most people only use a handful of stitches for their projects anyway. Unless you have plans for fancy stitching, there’s a good chance that you won’t use all 15 stitches either.
The machine uses a snap-on presser foot, which makes it so easy to change feet. There’s also an extra-high presser foot lift, which is another great feature for beginners.
The three-piece feed dog system makes it easy to work with just about any fabric without worrying about it pulling or bunching. You can easily sew through several layers of fabric without this machine even batting an eye.
The removable free arm makes it easy to add cuffs and sew pant legs. It also makes it easier to work on smaller garments, like those for kids.
When you’re sewing, you can use the reverse button to lock in a stitch. With a maximum sewing speed of 860 stitches per minute, you never have to worry about this machine sewing too quickly. The slower sewing speed makes this a great machine for beginners.
The 15312 has a front-loading hook bobbin and an auto declutch bobbin winder to keep you from over-winding your bobbins.
Along with all of these great features, the Hello Kitty 15312 comes with a slew of accessories to help you get started, including: zipper foot, general purpose foot, buttonhole foot, blind hem foot, seam ripper, bobbins, needle set.
The machine does have storage, so you can keep these accessories on hand at all times.
The folded carrying handle also makes it easy to take this lightweight sewing machine with you wherever you go.
- Easy to use
- Fun design
- Plenty of stitches
- Great for beginners
- Offers adjustable stitch length and zigzag width
- Removable free arm lets you work on sleeves and smaller garments
- Easy to transport
- Does not come with a cover
The only complaint we have (and it’s a small one) is that this machine does not come with a cover. It has an attached folding handle, but you’ll need to purchase a cover separately. Although it’s an added expense, we do recommend investing in either a soft or hard cover for this machine. A cover will keep dust away from the moving parts, which can keep it from working optimally.
The Hello Kitty 15312 may have been designed with kids in mind, but this machine is also great for adults who are just getting started with sewing. It’s just the right size and weight for traveling, but it’s well-built and comes with all of the features you need to get started. The fun design also makes this a great machine to work on for most sewing projects.
For a basic machine, this model is a great choice. It’s backed by Janome’s quality, which is some of the best in the industry. And with a metal frame, you can be sure that this machine will last for years if you take good care of it. The only real issue is that Janome doesn’t include a cover or a case. You’ll need to buy one separately or at least cover the machine when it’s not in use. Dust is the enemy of any sewing machine.
If you’re looking for a machine for the new seamstress in your life, I highly recommend the Janome Hello Kitty 15312. It sews like a dream and can tackle most sewing projects with ease.
