Our Juki MO-654DE Review
There’s a lot to love about the MO-654DE. This serger can handle all of the popular overlock and flatlock variations, and it even has built-in rolled hemming.
This machine has quite a few stitching options, including:
- 4-thread overlock
- 3-thread overlock
- 3-thread narrow overlock
- 3-thread flatlock
- 2-thread rolled hem
- 2-thread overcast
Having 2/3/4 thread options is convenient, and it’s really easy to convert to the two-thread option. All of these stitch options make this machine so versatile.
Threading, which can be a challenge with sergers, is easy, too, thanks to the color-coded threading guides. All of the paths are clearly marked, and the color coding really helps to avoid confusion when threading.
The lower looper threader disengages, so looper threading is also easy. Just slide the thread into the slot, and snap the looper into place. Chain looper threading is just as quick and easy. With the push of a button, the chain looper snaps down.
I like that this machine allows you to adjust practically everything. With the turn of a dial, you can adjust the lower knife cutting width. There’s also a heavy-duty knife system, so you can consistently cut fabrics of all weights (light and heavy). You can also adjust the length of the stitch with a dial. The Differential Feed dial allows you to make further adjustments, and you can change the tension using the 1-Rotation Thread Tension Dials.
The multi-function pressor foot gives you so many options for your creations. Along with overlock stitches, you can easily add elastic, ribbon and sequin to your projects by simply changing out the snap-on presser foot for a specialty foot.
The built-in seam guide takes the guesswork out of seam allowances, so your projects look more professional.
On top of all of these great features, this machine offers optimum lighting to the needle and fabric areas so that you can see your project clearly at all times.
With a weight of just 15.5lbs and a maximum sewing speed of 1500rpm, this machine is easy to transport and sews like a dream.

There’s no magical way to thread a serger. It still takes time. But Juki at least makes the process easier and less frustrating.
There’s a reason why so many seamstresses love Juki machines, and the MO-654DE is no exception. Quality, durability and ease of use make this serger well worth the cost. Click here to see the other sergers I recommend.
