NEX Portable Sewing Machine Review – Fun For Kids

Teaching kids to sew on a full-size sewing machine can be a challenge. Their small fingers make it difficult to work with some of the machine’s functions, and there’s always the worry of their hands or fingers being injured by the needle.

The NEX portable sewing machine is just the right size for kids. NEX scales down the size and simplifies the functions of a full-size machine to offer a kid-friendly option that’s ideal for beginners.

This machine has just the right number of features, and while not perfect, may be a good sewing machine for kids who are just being introduced to sewing.

Our Review of the NEX Portable Sewing Machine

The NEX is really compact in size (7.6” x 5” x 7.9”) and it’s ultra-lightweight (weighs just 2.2 pounds). Both of these features make this machine a great option for kids. It’s small and lightweight enough for kids to carry and operate with ease.

I will say that while the lighter weight makes this machine easier to transport, it also makes it a little more difficult to sew at higher speeds.

Aside from this gripe, the NEX sewing machine has just about everything beginners could want or need to get started.

The Basics

The NEX sewing machine brings everything back to basics. There are no complicated features or parts that may confuse beginners.

The two most advanced features on this machine, which are really just there for convenience, are the built-in bobbin winder and the thread cutter. The top-drop bobbin also makes it easy to get the machine set up. The rest is really simple.

This machine has:

  • 1 stitch
  • 2 sewing speeds

There is no reverse function. But you do have the option of using either the foot pedal or a button to sew fabrics.

One thing I do have to note is that this machine cannot sew really thick layers of fabric. It can sew multiple layers of thin fabric. Beginner projects don’t typically use thick fabrics anyway, so this really might not be an issue.

The NEX machine also has a built-in LED light, so you can see your workspace clearly. The LED light can also help prevent injuries because it’s easy to see the needle’s position.

Safety First

The NEX has a safety cover around the needle area, so you never have to worry about your child’s fingers getting caught in the needle.

The cover surrounds the entire area.

Comes with Everything You Need

The NEX sewing machine comes with everything you need to get started, including:

  • 4 needles
  • 4 thread spools
  • 1 DC power supply
  • 1 needle threader
  • 1 foot pedal

All you need is some fabric and thread to start a project.

2 Power Options

We really like that this machine can be powered by either a battery or electricity. NEX includes a power adapter, but you’ll need to supply your own batteries.

The machine takes four AA batteries.

It should be noted that you can’t put batteries in the machine and then plug it in. It has to be one or the other. If you plug in the machine with batteries in it, you might damage the unit.

Having two power options is great, especially if your child may want to sew while at a friend’s house or on vacation. The battery operation makes it easy to work on a project anytime and anywhere.

Pros

  • Easy to use
  • Simple design and operation
  • Ultra-lightweight
  • Compact enough for kids to use with ease
  • Two power options
  • Built-on LED light to illuminate your work space

Cons

  • Cannot sew thick layers of fabric
  • No reverse function

One issue with this machine is that it cannot sew thick fabrics or multiple layers of thicker fabrics. For many beginners, this won’t be an issue. But if your child’s project uses anything but normal, thin fabric, you may need to use a heavy duty sewing machine.

Another issue with this machine is that it doesn’t have a reverse function. That can make it difficult to start and stop seams. Without a reverse function, your work can easily be undone.

But again, we’re talking about a beginner sewing machine for kids. When your child is old and skilled enough to complete a really serious project, you can upgrade to a better, full-sized machine.

The fact that you can’t plug in this machine when it has batteries in it can also be an issue. If your child works on a project independently, he or she may forget that the batteries are in there and may wind up damaging the machine accidentally.

Some of these issues may seem like deal-breakers, but this machine is really designed to offer beginners a cost-effective introduction to sewing. You shouldn’t expect your child to be able to complete advanced projects on this machine. But you can expect to teach your child the basics of sewing.

The NEX portable sewing machine is a great option for anyone who wants to get their children interested in sewing. It’s lightweight and compact size makes it easy for kids of all ages to operate, and the simple design means that children can focus on improving their sewing skill – not learning how to use a laundry list of functions and features.

Pair this with a good sewing book and you have a winning combination.
