Sew Cool Sewing Machine – Easy Sewing Projects for Kids

Sew Cool sewing machineThe Sew Cool sewing machine is a very popular sewing machine for kids. Many parents are picking this machine up for their little ones to introduce them to sewing in a safe, fun way. Many have asked me if it is a good place to start when teaching a child to sew. Before we get to my experiences with the Sew Cool machine, let me tell you a bit about it.

What’s Included With The Sew Cool Sewing Machine?

Inside of the packaging you will get 8 sheets of fabric, 8 buttons, 1 bag of cotton batting, ribbons, 3 patterns, user guide and more. There is enough material to complete 9 projects or you can be creative and make something of your very own.

Easy Sewing Projects For Children

Sew Cool machineAll 9 of the projects that are included with the So Cool kit are super fun and creative. My grand-daughter was absolutely thrilled with all of the cute characters she was about to create. She had her choice of cats, owls, ponies (to name just a few) and each of them are very cute so she had a tough time choosing her first one. The projects are very simple. Basically, your child will be filling each character with cotton and sewing the edges creating a small stuffy. They are very cute and my grand-daughter was so excited with her result!

When you run out of patterns or want to try something new you can also download or create your own sewing patterns from the Sew Cool Sewing Studio. There were a lot of very nice patterns to choose from that will keep my grand-daughter busy for a long time.

Sew Cool is a sewing machine that uses a special process to “stitch” fabric together without using any thread. It is amazingly simple to use. Just follow the sewing guides and seam alignment and you will be on your way. Your child simply presses a button and follows the dotted line on the fabric and the sewing machine attaches the two fabrics together. There is no need for bobbins, foot pedals, needles or thread. Like advertised, it is very easy and very safe to use.

Does the Sew Cool Machine Work?

Now comes the most important part. Yes, my grand-daughter absolutely LOVED the So Cool sewing machine, but that didn’t last as long as I had hoped. In the beginning, the machine worked flawlessly. After just a handful of uses the needle broke. Needless to say, she was devastated. I wouldn’t be too upset about it if there was a way to replace the needles, but unfortunately there isn’t. Based on other reviews that I have seen on Amazon this seems to be a common issue with this machine. I should also mention that she was not rough on the machine at all. We followed all of the directions and worked as carefully as we could. It’s too bad that it has this issue because it has a ton of potential and it was so nice to see how excited she was after creating her first few projects with it. Hopefully, So Cool is able to fix this issue with future models, but for now I can’t recommend anyone purchasing this kids sewing machine.

My Recommendation

Janome Fast LaneThis would be a really nice machine for very young children to start out on, but right now I can’t recommend it due to its durability issues. So now you may be asking, “What should I get a child as their first sewing machine?” With guidance and supervision you can start a child on a regular sized or portable sewing machine. There are many very simple sewing projects that you can do with a child that can help them to quickly gain confidence as they improve. I would recommend any machine you use to have a finger guard and also that you are present to help support them as they learn. And, for them to learn faster I suggest going to this page: https://grandmalikestosew.com/learn-sew-5-places-can-start

One of my favorite sewing machines for children is the Janome Fast Lane. It is small, portable, comes with a finger guard and are very easy to use. However, please note that it is a real sewing machine and small children should be supervised while using it. They come in six different colors that look great. Be sure to click on each color as they sometimes vary in price.
